Privacy
The privacy practices for a small independent column. Minimum data collection, no third-party trackers, full data access on request.
This is a small independent column. The privacy practices reflect that. We collect the minimum amount of data we can get away with collecting and we do not share it with third parties for marketing purposes.
What we collect
If you visit the site without signing up to the newsletter or contacting us, we collect basic anonymous analytics: page views, country-level location, broad device type. This data is aggregated and we cannot identify individual readers from it. We use a privacy-respecting analytics tool that does not set tracking cookies.
If you sign up to the Friday newsletter, we collect your email address. We use that address only to send you the Friday newsletter. We do not pass it to other lists. The newsletter platform we use complies with Australian privacy law and provides one-click unsubscribe in every email.
If you email the column, we keep that email in our inbox. We do not move it into a CRM. We do not add you to any list as a result of your email.
Cookies
The site does not set first-party cookies. The fonts come from Google Fonts, which is the only third-party request the site makes, and Google may set its own analytics on those font requests. There is no other tracking on the site, no Facebook pixel, no LinkedIn tag, no remarketing layer.
Your rights
If you want to know what data we hold on you, email the column and we will tell you. The honest answer is almost always "an email address on the newsletter list, if you signed up". You can ask us to delete that record at any time. We do not retain backups beyond thirty days.
You have a right under Australian privacy law (Privacy Act 1988, as amended) to be told what personal information we hold about you, and to request its correction or deletion. We respond to all such requests within thirty days. There is no fee for this.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy in any material way, we will note it at the top of the page with the date of the change. The most recent change is the date in the page footer.
